Want to learn how to make your food go one step further, save some money and the planet too? Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day — from uneaten leftovers to spoiled produce. In fact, roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year gets lost or wasted. About 795 million people, or roughly 11 percent, of the world’s population is considered food insecure. Fruits and vegetables have the highest wastage rates of any food. Additionally, wasted food means that all the resources that go into creating that food are also wasted. Those resources, like fuel for shipping and water for growing crops, contribute to climate change. The good news is, there’s also a lot you can do in your everyday life to help reduce overall food waste. And while it might not seem like one person’s actions can make a difference, that’s not true. By being a good example, you can inspire others to reduce food waste in their lives, too!
